Easter is right around the corner and this holiday always reminds me of my family’s tradition of an Easter Egg Cracking Contest.

Each family member receives a hard boiled egg decorated with their name. The youngest is paired up against the oldest and they take turns hitting their egg against their opponent’s egg. Whoever comes out of the contest with at least one side of their egg intact moves on to the next round.

family tradition
The last individual with at least one side of their egg with no cracks is crowned the champion! Since it is sometimes determined by the luck of the draw (strongest egg) the winner can be anyone from the smallest of the kids to Great Grandma.

Family Tradition is defined as “The handing down of information, beliefs and customs by word of mouth or by example, from one generation to another without written instruction.” Family traditions bind one generation to the next; they become part of us.

You can make your credit union membership a family tradition too. I’ve been at the credit union for over 20 years and I’ve seen many members who pass down the tradition of credit union membership to their children and grandchildren. And ACU makes it easy to get your family involved.

Our Star Saver program gets children under the age of 12 involved with saving and having fun combined. When a child makes a deposit they earn tokens that can be traded in for games and prizes. The more they save, the bigger prize they can buy! Encourage your children or grandchildren to learn good financial habits by opening a Star Saver account today!

Our Identify Program is a great avenue for teens and young adults to learn more about spending, saving and even borrowing for the first time. With products designed specifically for this age group this program is a must for your young adult family members. We encourage you and your children to visit our Identify Website at www.idmyway.com to learn more.

So, my arm is ready and I’m poised to win this year’s Easter Egg Cracking Contest. What’s my prize…nothing more than bragging rights for the next year! But that’s okay - seeing this tradition handed down to my new grandson will be my reward this year!

Have any fun traditions in your family? We’d love to hear them! And, if your family tries my family’s Easter Egg Cracking Contest this year let me know how it goes. I bet a fun time will be had by all and a new tradition started.

Thanks for sharing Kathy! The egg cracking contest sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to mention to my family & see if they want to try it. If we do I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. The only tradition we have each easter, which is very typical, is an easter egg hunt in the backyard. Every year there is one golden egg that has $5 in it.

Nicki – Thanks for responding! Great to hear you were going to try the egg cracking and I hope you had fun with it! We had a lot of fun with ours this year and of course I got pictures of my new Grandson going head to head in competition with his Great Grandma. I made it to the top four, but my niece Stephanie won our egg cracking competition this year.

Easter has always been the time of year for me to reflect on the past year, take some time off work, pay my taxes, and usher in Spring with a sense of renewal. My family is Eastern Orthodox - so there is usually alot of church going during holy week as well. My neighbors always tease me because my Easter decorations stay up for an additional week, as the holiday is usually preceded by Passover - see wiki link for details. I also get a break at retailers on unsold Easter baskets and Candy! Our family tradition centers on the traditional Easter bread (aka-tsoureki) and eggs are dyed red - which represents the color and renewal of life. We also have an Egg Cracking contest - but the Egg Hunt is famous for those little plastic eggs with nickels, dimes, & quarters inside. We put out 75 eggs this year - each having different denominations, and it all adds up to about $40 out on my lawn. Trust me - we'll be stopping by Abri to make the deposits into each of the Kid's Star Saver accounts!!!

James – Thanks for the reply and glad to hear you are passing the “savings tradition” on to your family. It is so important that they learn this from a young age. We too have the family traditions of church going, getting the food blessed and an Easter Egg Hunt. It was great that the weather was nice this year and the kids could do the hunt outside. You are the first person who has told me that your family also has an egg cracking contest. My grandfather told us he didn’t know where or when this tradition began in the family but he couldn't remember an Easter without it.
